Exploring oxygen diffusion and respiration in pome fruit using non-destructive gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy

Pome fruit stored under a controlled atmosphere (CA) often suffers hypoxia due to the mismatch of O2 level in storage rooms and fruit’s consumption. Fruit response-based sensing control could be an efficient approach reduce hypoxia-related physiological disorders therefore increase shelf life fruit. This research aims validate evaluate application nondestructive gas scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) post-harvest. In first stage, GASMAS sensor was validated on mimicking multilayer model system where high correlation observed between measured reference partial pressures (r2 ? 0.9). Later, evaluated two apple cultivars (Malus x domestica ‘Golden delicious’, Malus ‘Nicoter’) one pear cultivar (Pyrus communis ‘Conference’). The signal from delicious’ apples were nearly 2 times higher than ‘Nicoter’ 5 ‘Conference’ pears. next measurements taken water submerged investigate difference consumption those calculated relative changes during respiration evolution pressure after nitrogen treatment for both found different. It hypothesized that these findings may attributed variations porosity. And finally, influence skin additional surface coating exchange studied by immersing unpeeled, peeled coated samples gaseous h before measurement. compared unpeeled which already exhibited lower rate samples.
